Ultimate Shimla Travel Itinerary: Places to Visit in Shimla
From childhood vacations to school trips and family adventures, Shimla has always held a special place in my heart. In this complete Shimla travel guide, I'm sharing the best places to visit in Shimla including Kufri, Jakhu Temple, Mall Road, The Ridge, where we stayed, and everything you need to plan the perfect hill station getaway. ๐๏ธโจ
There are some places you visit and enjoy, and then there are places that become a part of your story. For me, Shimla is one of those places.
Nestled in the beautiful hills of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla has been a destination close to my heart for as long as I can remember. I first visited Shimla as a little girl on a family vacation and later returned during a school trip with my friends in high school. Those memories of long walks through the hills, shopping, endless laughter, and cups of hot chai in the chilly mountain air have stayed with me over the years.
So when I recently had the chance to visit Shimla again during my trip to India, it felt like reconnecting with an old friend. Some places had changed, some had stayed exactly the same, but the magic of Shimla was still very much alive.
If you're planning a family vacation to Shimla or simply looking for the perfect Shimla itinerary, here are the top places to visit and everything you need to know from my recent experience.
Where We Stayed
One of the highlights of our trip was staying at Snow Valley Resort Shimla. The hotel is beautifully located overlooking the mountains, offering breathtaking valley views right from the room balcony. We woke up to mist-covered hills and fresh mountain air felt like a dream.
The property is family-friendly, comfortable, and conveniently located close to many of Shimla's top attractions.
Why I loved it:
- Stunning mountain views
- Spacious rooms
- Family-friendly atmosphere
- Easy access to major attractions
- Beautiful sunrise and sunset views
Kufri, Shimla
Located about 16 kilometres from Shimla, Kufri is one of the most popular places to visit near Shimla and a must-add to your itinerary.
What made Kufri memorable for me wasn't just the views but the journey getting there. To reach the main viewpoint, visitors can either hike uphill or ride horses that take you up the rugged mountain path. We opted for the horse ride, and honestly, it became one of the most adventurous parts of our trip. The narrow mountain trails, the excitement of riding uphill, and the stunning views around every corner made it an experience I'll never forget.
If you're feeling adventurous and comfortable walking uphill, you can choose the hike instead. Either way, the journey is half the fun.
Once you reach the top, you're rewarded with spectacular Himalayan views that seem to stretch forever. During winter, Kufri transforms into a snowy wonderland, while spring and summer offer lush green landscapes and clear mountain vistas.
You'll also find plenty of activities for families and thrill-seekers alike, including:
- Horse riding
- ATV rides
- Ziplining
- Mountain viewpoints
- Snow activities during winter
The panoramic views from Kufri are absolutely stunning. On clear days, you can see snow-capped Himalayan peaks stretching into the distance. Kufri deserves a place on every Shimla itinerary.
Best Time to Visit Kufri: March to June and December to February for snow lovers.
Jakhu Mandir
One of the most iconic places to visit in Shimla is Jakhu Mandir. Situated on Jakhu Hill, the highest point in Shimla, this temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is famous for its towering Hanuman statue that can be seen from many parts of the city.
The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. As someone who loves combining travel with spirituality, visiting Jakhu Temple was one of my favorite experiences during the trip. There's something incredibly peaceful about standing high above the city, surrounded by mountains and nature. A small warning though: watch out for the monkeys! They're adorable but known for being a little mischievous.
Pro Tip: Avoid carrying food openly and keep your sunglasses secure.
Mall Road
If Shimla has a heartbeat, it's Mall Road. No matter how many times I visit Shimla, I always find myself gravitating back to Mall Road. It's the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of travel.
We spent hours wandering through the charming streets, stopping for snacks, browsing local shops, and enjoying the cool mountain breeze. There is something incredibly nostalgic about walking here in the evening as families stroll together and the lights begin to glow across the town. The best part? No vehicles are allowed, making it one of the most pleasant places to explore on foot.
Some things worth shopping for include:
- Himachali caps
- Woollen shawls
- Handmade souvenirs
- Wooden handicrafts
- Local jams and pickles
- Traditional jewelry
Travel Tip: Visit in the evening when the lights come on and the entire area feels magical.
The Ridge
The Ridge is undoubtedly one of the most iconic places to visit in Shimla. Located right beside Mall Road, this large open space offers breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains and serves as a gathering place for both locals and tourists.
One of my favorite things about The Ridge is a tradition that has been around for generations. You'll find local photographers and vendors offering traditional Himachali outfits that visitors can rent and wear for photos. If you're visiting Shimla, don't skip this experience!
Dressing up in the colorful Himachali attire and taking photographs with the mountains and Christ Church in the background is such a fun way to create lasting memories. I still remember doing this years ago, and seeing families continue the tradition today made me smile.
It's one of those little travel experiences that perfectly captures the spirit of Shimla. You'll also find plenty of photo opportunities, street performers, local vendors, and incredible sunset views.
Best Time to Visit Shimla
Shimla is beautiful year-round, but each season offers a different experience.
Summer (March โ June)
Perfect weather for sightseeing and family vacations.
Monsoon (July โ September)
Lush green landscapes but occasional landslides and rain.
Winter (December โ February)
Ideal for snowfall lovers and winter photography.
Why Shimla Will Always Be Special to Me
Shimla isn't just another hill station on the map. It's a place filled with childhood memories, school trip adventures, family laughter, and now new memories made with loved ones. Walking through Mall Road again, visiting Kufri, admiring the views from Jakhu Temple, and watching the sunset over the mountains reminded me why Shimla continues to be one of India's most beloved destinations.
Whether it's your first visit or your tenth, Shimla has a way of making you slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the beauty around you.
If you're planning a trip to Himachal Pradesh, make sure Shimla is at the top of your list. Trust me, this charming hill station will steal your heart just like it stole mine all those years ago.
